Biography

Joe Peraino Bio - Blue Ridge Mountains

Joe Peraino was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in Psychology and minored in Mathematics. After a brief visit to Europe, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. He taught Statistics and Diagnostic Assessment there. His doctoral dissertation, presented at an annual convention of the American Psychoilogical Association and in Self Magazine, is entitled Personality Similarity in Friend and Dating Relationships.

Joe began a pscyhological practice in Houston, Texas. While running a full-time psychotherapy practice, his research continued resulting in his being published in scientific, peer-review journals and presenting at scientific conferences. He has appeared on radio and TV as well as in the written medium including The Chicago Tribune, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Fox News.Com, Houston Chronicle, Guideposts for Kids, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Univision.com (in Spanish), and others. He has served as President of the Houston Psychological Association, on the adjunct faculty at the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine, and on the Boards of the Mental Health Association and National Speakers Association-Houston Chapter.

Joe's philosophy centers around the power of relationships in people's lives. International studies consistently show that a person's happiness is primarily determined by the quality of their relationships, and this is especially true in work settings. People work better in teams and when they have positive relationships with their boss and co-workers. When people are happy at home, they bring that happiness to work and work harder with fewer distractions from their personal lives: less illness and doctors appointments, fewer disability claims, higher productivity. Most stresses come from incorrect attitudes about work and life and inability to communicate effectively. Joe's ability to help people gain perspective and communicate well makes him highly qualified to help people identify goals and help them achieve them.

Joe Peraino is happily married to Barbara for 25 years and counting. Their eldest child attends graduate school at Univeristy of California, Davis, studying sociology and economic development. (We try not to feel sorry for him since he lives two hours from Lake Tahoe—90 minutes from San Francisco, less than one hour from the wine country, and one hour from the Pacific coast.) Their youngest child is a basketball fanatic in her third year at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
